What Is a Carotid Ultrasound?
A carotid ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to visualize the arteries in your neck. It helps doctors identify narrowing or blockages that could increase the risk of stroke.
Why Is This Test Recommended?
Your physician may suggest a carotid ultrasound to:
- Spot plaque accumulation in the carotid arteries
- Evaluate your risk for stroke
- Track existing artery narrowing over time
- Investigate symptoms such as dizziness or changes in vision
What to Expect During the Procedure
- A technician will apply gel to the skin on your neck
- A handheld device (transducer) is moved over the area to capture images
- The test is painless and typically takes around 30 minutes
- No special preparation is required beforehand
Understanding Your Results
Your doctor will examine the images to look for any restricted blood flow or blockages. Depending on the findings, they may recommend lifestyle adjustments, medications or additional testing.
